Best Places to Shop for Furniture in the Lower Mainland (and online)

June 1, 2022Stephanie Hilton

Most of the work I do focuses on the structural aspects of design but some clients need help getting from structural to decorative. In that case, I’m always happy to source and purchase the furniture, art and accessories to make your new space shine. But what if you don’t have the budget for a designer but desperately need some upgrades in your home? I’ve got you covered today with my list of tried-and-true retailers to shop for furniture in the lower mainland.

furniture retailers in the lower mainland

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to shopping for furniture. In order to get closer to narrowing down your options, here are some important questions to ask yourself before you hit the pavement:

  • What is your budget?
  • How specific are you about size, colour, fabric, etc?
  • How long are you willing to wait?

Once you’re clear on these aspects you can decide whether you want to shop custom, semi-custom or non-custom. You might want to go out and shop through several showrooms before deciding on your pieces. This will give you some insight into what’s on the market, what the pricing is like at each retailer and what the timelines are like.

BUYING FURNITURE IN THE LOWER MAINLAND (and online)

SEMI-CUSTOM - What it means and where to shop.

This is the biggest retailer category and the type of furniture most of us are accustomed to buying. When you walk into a retail furniture showroom, it's a combination of dozens of manufacturers' products. Each manufacturer determines which sizes and finishes their products come in.

Semi-custom means that there is a frame size which may be adjusted for an additional fee but not always. Some manufacturers are not flexible on changes to frame sizing. There will be a standard set of finishes and fabrics available and pricing will be according to the selection you make. You may also use a custom fabric of your own for an additional fee.

The retailers I’ve selected are all considered semi-custom although some of the manufacturers they represent may be considered fully custom if they’re willing to adjust frame sizes and work with you to design the best fit for your space. If you’re not seeing what you want in a showroom, speak to the staff. They can let you know if there’s flexibility in some aspects of their furniture and direct you to products that you can work with.
